Full-time Exempt

The Breast Oncology Nurse Navigator will be responsible for the coordination of patient care across the continuum under the auspices of physician's prescribed plan of care, national oncology guidelines, and within the scope of nursing practice. Educates/provides information and supports clients and patients to guide and facilitate understanding of treatment plans. The Breast Nurse Navigator serves as a patient advocate, guides and supports patients/families throughout the cancer care and survivorship experience. Oversees, directs, and provides holistic, culturally competent and evidence-based nursing care. Monitors patient outcomes and participates in quality improvement activities. Contributes to and collaborates with health care team members to positively impact patient outcomes and patient experiences. The Breast Nurse Navigator is recognized as a professional role model and clinical expert and promotes a professional environment that supports nursing excellence and collaborative shared decision-making. Bachelor's degree in Nursing and chemotherapy/biotherapy training is required. Approximately three to four years of progressively more responsible clinical nursing experience in oncology required. Experiences such as but not limited to the following are preferred: as an oncology nurse in an outpatient/home care oncology or inpatient setting, working with medical oncologists, hematologists or surgeons. He/she must have clinical maturity, expertise, and excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration and negotiation skills as well as effective oral and written communication skills and team building skills. The Breast Nurse Navigator will demonstrate ongoing professional development by continual learning activities (journals, seminars, etc) and involvement in professional organizations at the local, state, or national level. Licensure as a registered nurse in the District of Columbia is required as well as Basic Life Support. Certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Certification in Breast Care Nursing through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation this is required within one year of hire if not already attained upon hire.
